Louis Gluehr – oak leaves and acorns

FUNDRAISING

OUR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN HAS STARTED!  GOAL: 5000 USD / 6125 CAD AND CURRENTLY AT 90%

To keep our Library up and running, we hold a fundraising campaign from September to December.

This is the link to the donation button: Donate to keep the Antique Pattern Library running!

If you can’t afford to donate, but would like to help the Antique Pattern Library, introducing the Library to people who don’t know of it yet, is very useful, since it broadens our user base and therefore also our future donor base. Blogs, Tiktok, Instagram, Pinterest, Ravelry, Facebook, other social media – show others your favorite publications and what you made using them. Our work is only useful when people actually use it!

If that is not possible either, just enjoy our new publications either for inspiration or for your own work!

NEW PUBLICATION

K-KB001 Louis Gluehr – Oak leaves with acorns
Small fragment of a Berlin woolwork pattern, showing oak leaves and acorns. No maker or pattern number but most likely from Louis Gluehr based on the partial inscription on the bottom.
Image donated by ebay seller karamellblau, edited and charted by Sytske Wijnsma.

Berlin woolwork patterns would often contain more than one motif. As patterns were expensive and precious, such multiple patterns would be cut into pieces and those used as separate patterns, an easy way to share patterns and costs among more needleworkers. Unfortunately such fragments can be difficult to identify. In this case however, part of the bottom inscription with the makers name and address is preserved. We have more patterns from various publishers and on comparing the complete patterns with inscriptions to this partial one, only Louis Gluehr matches. The pattern number would have gone with the right side of the pattern, and until we find another complete copy we can’t reconstruct that. Still, a lovely little motif, probably used on cigarette etuis, boxes and other small items.
