These embroidery patterns were often added as supplement to various ladies’ magazines. This pattern does not mention any such magazine, and unfortunately also no date. It probably was sold as individual pattern; the number 4 that is printed in the lower left corner indicates a price class, and the pattern has its own number. Some publishers have pattern numbers that run in the ten thousand or more, but this one is not such a late pattern.
This border in blue and orange-brown shades could be used as a central stripe in chair upholstery or pillow covers. Chair coverings tend to wear most in the middle and on the corners, and if the center stripe could be replaced when worn, it would not be necessary to re-upholster the entire chair. The border has a limited number of colors, making beadwork another possibility, as beads are not available in the hundreds of colors that embroidery floss or tapestry wool can be had.
