The Dutch hat drew my attention – I don’t recall ever seeing such a hat in Dutch traditional costumes and don’t know how it got that description. The closest thing that looks like it are the Frisian day hats, worn instead of lace caps on everyday occasions, that are basically a square with a crocheted frill on two sides of a corner. The square could be filet embroidery, crochet, or knitting. There’s people in the USA who are called Dutch but are actually from German descent, maybe the hat type originated there.

Aunt Ellen’s article about samplers did raise my eyebrows a little. It actually says needles were invented in the 1500s whereas archeological finds show that needles were used in the Stone Age. Possibly it is meant that special needles for sampling purposes were invented. Likewise thimbles have been in use since much earlier than the 1595 date mentioned in the article, the earliest finds in the UK are from the 10th century. Unreliable information, to say the least – sorry, Aunt Ellen.
