Aglaia 1849 No. 1 – dog on a cushion
INSPIRED BY QUEEN VICTORIAS SPANIEL DASH
A-MH138 1849 Aglaia No. 1 – Dog on a cushion
King Charles spaniel sitting on a red cushion with two golden yellow tassels. The image is probably inspired by another pattern that was based on a painting by Landseer that depicted pets of Queen Victoria. The dog lying on a small footstool is Dash, a dog that she got while still a princess. The other pattern isolated Dash on the footstool without showing the other pets. Cue an avalanche of spaniel embroidery patterns, most on a cushion, but without the blue ribbon and bows that were shown on the painting.
Single sheet, handpainted Berlin woolwork pattern. Pattern size 110×98, grid size 120×110.
From the collection of Marleen van Horssen, edited and charted by Sytske Wijnsma.
Here are three of the other embroidery patterns (thumbnails only, because of fair use rules) but search on Queen Victoria Dash spaniel embroidery and you’ll find many more. The parrot that’s also in the Landseer painting probably was subject of another embroidery pattern, though I haven’t yet found an exact copy. Queen Victoria had many more pets during her long life, but the spaniel Dash is the most popular when it comes to embroidery patterns based on them.
Aglaia is the name of one of the three Graces. The Dutch ladies magazine of which this pattern was a supplement took that name, possibly to symbolize their education and their excellence. The original Greek Aglaia was not involved in production or publication of this pattern 🙂
