Marguerite Lespagne – COURS DE BRODERIE

P-YS002 Marguerite Lespagne – Cours de Broderie
Small booklet teaching how to do hand embroidery using an embroidery frame. Intended for middle school girls in the Gironde department. 8th Edition, 1931. Introduction says 1907. Includes how to fix the fabric on the frame and how to hold the needle. Mostly monogram embroidery, in broderie Anglaise, letters ending in sharp points, interlaced letters, decorated letters, and how to embroider letters consisting of dots. Since it’s meant for young girls below high school age, this is about basic techniques.
Donated, scanned and edited by Sytske Wijnsma.

A century ago embroidery lessons started at an early age, and of course only the girls were taught how to. And not just basic punched-card embroidering, this was all about monograms, possibly meant for marking linens, which was at the time necessary if the washing was done elsewhere. Nowadays we have pre-embroidered monogram ribbons and even those are becoming vintage now. If you really like those Sajou and DMC monogram books and want to try it out yourself, remember, if the little girls from primary school (aged 6 to 12) could learn how to, so can we. Among the many manuals about embroidery this is a nice and simple one, though for experienced embroiderers it won’t contain much news.
